MARK JENKINS

THE CASTING SHOW

The AMUSEUM of Contemporary Art presents MARK JENKINS – THE CASTING SHOW, the first museum solo exhibition in Europe dedicated to the work of American artist and tape art pioneer Mark Jenkins.

The exhibition features a wide range of previously unseen hyperrealistic sculptures, meticulously handcrafted by the artist using tens of thousands of meters of packaging tape.

The exhibition title refers to the dual meaning of the English word “casting” – both the sculptural process of creating a mold of the human body and the act of assigning a role to a performer. Mark Jenkins brings these two meanings together by casting real human bodies and transforming their hyperrealistic replicas into protagonists of his artistic installations.

For the exhibition, the museum's minimalist galleries have been transformed under the artistic direction of Sebastian Pohl into an almost private, domestic environment. Historic Baroque wallpaper, elegant wood paneling, magnificent chandeliers, and carefully selected antique furnishings create an atmosphere that feels both familiar and extraordinary, blurring the boundaries between exhibition space, artwork, and viewer. Within this surreal setting, the hyperrealistic sculptures appear as seemingly natural inhabitants, their unsettling presence challenging conventional patterns of perception.

The exhibition is further complemented by Jenkins' “Kick Paintings” and “Hand-signed Paintings”. For these bodies of work, Mark Jenkins uses old oil paintings as the basis for deliberate artistic interventions. The resulting compositions are often surprising and humorous, bringing traditional painting into dialogue with contemporary artistic expression. His interventions disrupt the original pictorial worlds, transporting seemingly conventional decorative paintings into the present and breathing new life into them.

The exhibition is open from November 6, 2026, through June 6, 2027.
