Contemporary Art Museum Munich

AMUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

The AMUSEUM of Contemporary Art opened its doors on 5 November 2022. It is the first museum in the world to be devoted to the still-young international street art genre, working closely together with the leading players in this movement and remaining wholly authentic.

Background to the Museum

The name AMUSEUM is a word play on ‘amusement’ and ‘museum’ and reflects the sarcastic humour that is so typical on the street art movement.

The work for the museum is based on Positive-Propaganda’s collaboration with the pioneers and key players of the street art movement – including Shepard Fairey, BLU, Mark Jenkins, ESCIF, NoNÅME, FAILE and INVADER – which has been going strong for over a decade. This authentic exchange gives rise to the unique opportunity of following and documenting at first hand the story and the creative pursuits of the largely publicity-shy art activists, most of whom prefer to remain anonymous in their work.

As the not-for-profit art-association behind the AMUSEUM of Contemporary Art, the art association sees itself as being responsible for documenting – based on previous collaborations and projects – the creations of the street art movement for generations to come. It aims to do this in a sustainable and genuine way, while also making it as accessible as possible to a wide audience.

For this, the AMUSEUM of Contemporary Art uses its museum format to create high-calibre exhibitions by teaming up with individual artists from the street art movement. It also works with them on designing publications and a versatile supporting programme that provides insight into the subject matter of the exhibitions and the artworks shown there.

The museum’s objective is not only for its work to generate interest in art in general and street art in particular, but also to pave the way for a dialogue across all echelons of society. In the spirit of the street art movement, the AMUSEUM wants to create an awareness for and an understanding of the general challenges of our time and to inspire its visitors to reflect upon these.
